A corrugated iron hut displaying the ‘make do’ housing used by some of the 250 ex-servicemen in our region who were granted horticultural properties as part of the government’s repatriation scheme after WWII. The Village Nissen Hut has been furnished to show the living conditions of the early ‘blockies’ and their families. Initially, huts like this did not have domestic water or electricity. Water had to be carted in tanks on block trolleys pulled by horse or tractor.
